Organically Grown Fruits and Vegetables May Replace Those Grown Using Paraquat and Other Deadly Agricultural chemicals.
The marketplace may be the final determinate for ending the use of paraquat as health-conscious Americans turn to organic fruits and vegetables
Wednesday, March 2, 2022 - Researchers think that choosing to eat organic fruit and vegetable may lessen the likelihood of developing paraquat Parkinson's disease, a deadly neurological disorder. Avoiding produce that has been raised using pesticides and herbicides may be critical to eating healthy. According to the International Press Agency (IPA), more than 400 agricultural chemicals are used on crops to kill unwanted pests and weeds. Chemicals like paraquat are also sprayed on certain crops at harvest time to dry them out making them less costly to harvest. Entire fields are being "burned down" not with fire, but with paraquat so that they will quickly decompose and can be gathered and turned into fertilizer for next year. IPA told readers that paraquat threatens the health of farmworkers that are exposed to high levels of the defoliant who are reporting developing Parkinson's disease from repeated paraquat exposure. "These pesticides, however, threaten the health of people who work with them on farms or agricultural land and of those who live near these areas. Two of the most dangerous pesticides that are still in use in the U.S. are paraquat and rotenone. Exposure to these pesticides was found to lead to an increased risk of developing Parkinson's disease, according to various studies."
Much has been written about how toxic paraquat is and dangerous to human health and thousands of paraquat lawsuits await Syngenta, the maker of the defoliant. Only one sip of paraquat causes instant death in humans. Around 50 countries have banned paraquat after drawing the inference that if it is so toxic when swallowed, other methods of ingesting the defoliant may be equally as lethal. China, Switzerland, the UK, Thailand, and the European Union are foreword-thinking countries that are putting public health concerns before corporate profits. Paraquat is thought to be the cause of Parkinson's disease by farmworkers and others who have been exposed to regularly inhaling the chemical in repetitive low-doses such as when it hangs in the air after the farm sprays. People living, working, and playing in the surrounding communities complain of the constant, unmistakable smell of paraquat which proves that they are inhaling it with every breath. In an inexplicable twist of logic, paraquat has been banned on golf courses throughout the United States, but farms are allowed to spray it at will. Farmers on corporate farms think that banning paraquat would cause their production costs to increase to such an extent that they would be put out of business. Nonetheless, it looks as if the days of the conventionally-grown product may be coming to an end. Fruits and vegetables that are grown locally and earning an organic certification are thought to be less likely to cause health problems including neurological problems. IPA tells readers that organic pest and weed control methods are less toxic than paraquat. Organic farms use "copper hydroxide, horticultural vinegar, corn gluten, neem and vitamin D3." People that eat organic report feeling better and have fewer allergies or skin problems than those that eat conventionally-grown vegetables.
